What Causes Chest Pain When Suffering From COPD?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Apr 2014
Question: I have COPD. A while ago I started to feel like I was choking and that my throat was being strangled. The pain progressed to my back and to my chest. It lasted only a few minutes. I have had it before and the pain is all over and excruciating - the longest its lasted is an hour. It always feels like a "strangling" pain. I went to emergency once and they did some heart tests and said I was fine. Is this part of the COPD?

Brief answer...given below Detailed answer.... Hello, Thanks for the query. I understand Your problem and definitely a chest pain always brings the fear of some heart pathology. A chest pain has an extensive differential diagnosis ranging from cardiac pathology like angina, heart attack to lung pathology like pulmonary embolism to non cardiac causes like peptic ulcer, reflux disorder, musculoskeletal conditions etc. Since you already have been to ER,them it definitely rules out cardiac and lung disorders and this a very comforting fact for the patient. In such a scenario,I feel that you may be having some musculoskeletal problem which might have been brought up because of some coughing episodes or some abnormal posture. It can be even gastroeosophageal reflux,if you feel any sensation of food moving upward after your meals or having acidity etc. In any case, the serious reasons for your chest pain have been ruled out and you can heave a XXXXXXX of relief, however it should be explored further. You must discuss with your physician about the various other non cardiac causes for your chest pains. I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query. Best of luck Thanks
