What Causes Chest Congestion While On Sudafed?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Sep 2017
Question: My elderly mother has a bad cold/virus. She has fairly severe chest congestion. Has been coughing for about 4 days. She also has a lot of eye mucus in both eyes now. She saw a doctor yesterday who prescribed Mucinex, and other capsules for her cough. She is on multiple blood pressure & heart meds, so can't take Sudafed. She hasn't starting improving yet. The dripping eye mucus seems strange. I'm wondering if that indicates something else. If she isn't better by tomorrow may take her to see a different Dr. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
superimposed bacterial infection should be looked for

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

A superimposed bacterial infection should be looked for. If there is hypoxemia, shortness of breath, persistent wheezing, fever or deranged metabolic profile then antibiotics based on severity should be initiated. If the lower respiratory tract infection is causing an exacerbation of a preexisting COPD or bronchial asthma then corticosteroids may also be added. I would advise a second opinion if the above symptomatic treatment doesn't lead to symptomatic relief within 24 hours.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
