What Causes Changes In The Consistency Of Stool While Having Diabetes?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Jan 2017
Question: Dear WebMD:
I am experiencing round (half inch to 1 inch or so---meatball) stools the last couple of weeks. Prior to that for several months, my stools would be loose for a week, then firm and normal and then round (meatball) size. Color remains normal, routine bloodwork for my kidney transplant remains normal. I am type 2 Diabetic for 20 years and take insulin. Glucose is manged (average 140). Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Have you had a screening colonoscopy?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have review your information fully and this raises difficulties with transit. Changes in the consistency of stool over several months could be related to functional problems but also possible small growths such as polyps in the big intestines. It is recommended that you get one as soon as you turn 50. If you have never done so, this will be a great time to do so. This will allow us to assess the intestines as well as investigate the possible causes of these changes in your stool. It should also be noted that the long duration of diabetes could be responsible for this as well.

In the interim, I will suggest you eat much fruits, vegetables, fibers, drink much water and do mild-moderate physical exercise of 30minutes on most days of the week. This will while we get the colonoscopy done to further assess the intestines.

I wish you well and hope to hear from you if you get any further concerns.
