Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: I am concerned about a bump the size of a pea on my epiglottis cartilage that is flesh colored behind tongue facing out. Also a white flat patch with red in it underneath tonsil. Both are painless and aren't growing, but what is going on? An ent did a larynscopy and said everything looks fine but I'm not sure.

Brief Answer:
normal/epigolttic cyst.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having swelling over epiglottis. I would like to ask you few more details.

Is there any change of voice ?
Is your swelling associated with cough ?

Based on your clinical details, it appears to be epiglottic cyst (most common) or normal anatomical protrusion.

I suggest the following measures, to overcome your swelling.

1. stop smoking or alcohol abuse (if you are with these habits).
2. Anti allergic medication like tab.citrizine 10 mg at bed time.
3. Warm water gargling (twice daily).
4. steam inhalation.

As such, your laryngoscopy is normal and with no other symptoms. follow these measures for 15 days and re-evaluate again with laryngoscopy.

In case of persistence, biopsy may required.

Do not worry, it is not cancer (uncommon in your age, symptoms are not suggestive).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
