Question: My mom had a cold stroke a few mins ago. Currently she is in the ER. She has been in and out of the hospital prior to Christmas. She has diabetes Long term, high cholesterol and was told CHF. She also seems to be breathing heavily. Is it a blockage related to heart, pulmonary related or something else. She is on glucophage, zetia, aricept, norvasc, hydrochorothiazide, baby aspirin. Any recommendation

Brief Answer:
Stroke from blockage of the brain blood vessels

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear about your mother. It sounds like her stroke was related to an artery being blocked. This is usually due to a small blood clot blocking an already small artery. There is nothing that can be done to help dissolve the clot. The best thing now is to make sure her blood pressure stays well controlled, her diabetes is well controlled and her cholesterol remains low. She will probably be on a medication to prevent further clots like plavix. She will need physical therapy depending on the amount of disability from her stroke.

In summary
1. nothing to do at this point
2. Stroke from a blood clot
3. maintain good control of blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol
4. Physical therapy
5. Plavix or other blood thinners to prevent further clots

I hope I answered your question. please contact us again if you have any additional questions
