What Causes Blood In Urine?

default
Posted on Fri, 28 Aug 2015
Question: Hi,

A week or so ago, I had blood in my urine only at the beginning of urination. I went to doctor, but urine sample then showed no blood. He said he could not do anything unless I had blood in urine when giving a specimen Today, when I got up, I again had blood in the urine, but only at the beginning. Later urinations today showed no sign of blood. Should I be concerned and what are probable causes and what should I do?

Brief Answer:
Could be due to enlarged prostate .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have passed blood in urine twice during last week.

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1) Do you have other urinary symptoms like increased frequency for urination ,poor stream ,urgency ,nocturnal frequency etc ?
2) Are you taking any drugs especially blood thinners like Aspirin ?

The commonest cause of blood in urine at this age is Enlarged Prostate the blood coming from a small tiny veins on superficial surface of prostate being ruptured which seals of itself immediately.

Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical and digital rectal examination and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Urine routine and culture.
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis
3) Serum PSA.

In the mean while you can take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefexime along with urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily and Tomsulosin once daily.urine alkaliser thrice daily.

Further treatment will depend upon result of these tests and final diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Prostate removed several years ago and had to have 43 follow-up radiation treatments. Check PSA twice per year and has been Non-detectable since radiation.

All other symptoms have not changed - same frequency day and night.

I have been taking one baby aspirin per day for years.

Do I have to go to doctor to get the antibiotics you recommend.

We are on vacation for 2 months in XXXXXXX CO. Should I try and find a urologist here immediately or could it wait until I get back to Florida in early September.

Again, blood is only in the very beginning of urination and has only occurred 2 times in two weeks, in the morning when I go to the bathroom. Completely clear all other times.

Thanks and I look forward to your response.
