What Causes Blood In Urine When Suffering From Diverticulitis?

default
Posted on Sat, 17 May 2014
Question: I was in ER yesterday and was diagnosed with diverticulitis. I was given two antibiotics and IV fluid as I had vomited the night before. I was sent home with two antibiotics. Thus morning I attempted to have coffee and the piain went from manageable to nearly unmanageable. The part that worries me is that I noticed blood in my urine this morning. Should I be concerned?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Blood in urine is not characteristic for diverticulitis. Most likely it indicates urinary tract stones or infection. if your pain is in the lower abdomen and radiates to the back or groin, kidney stone is possible. Diverticulitis gives usually lower left abdominal pain along with some bloating, blood in stool. Fever can be present.

Can you please attach tests results which were done in the ER recently so I can give more accurate answer?

It is possible that diverticulitis is not the right diagnose. Please put the pressure on the abdominal area where the pain is located and release the pressure suddenly. Does it make the pain worse?
Do you have any frequent urinating, burning while urinating?
What kind of antibiotics and in what dosages have you been prescribed?

Hope this will help.
Regards.

I don't have the results scanned but the CT scan showed diverticulitis and a lot of inflammation in left side of ado in where all of my pain has been and severe cramping. I am having trouble having bowel movements. I do have pain across my lower back but because of all of the discomfort in my abdomen, it's hard to tell where that pain maybe coming from.

All items on my CVC were normal except for the following
My AST value was low 6
Creating low 0.25
Lymphocytes low 13
WBC x10*3 is 13

How about urine analysis?
It is hard to give exact reason. But with antibiotics and diet diverticulitis pain should get better.
There is always a risk of diverticle perforation when inflammation is present. Pain aggravation can indicate it. It would be safer for you to visit a doctor once again and have this tests repeated along with abdominal ultrasound and abdominal X-ray.

Regards.
