What Causes Blood In Stool While Having Diverticulosis And Hemorrhoids?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Nov 2016
Question: Hello, I'm XXXX, living in Australia. Just had a routine faeces test at age 65, resulting in evidence of blood in my stool. I Had a colonoscopy 2 years ago [couple of small polyps removed]. I'm not too keen to do another invasive test. I have diverticulitis & haemorrhoids, but no bleeding from the bowel. Should I wait?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
Diverticulosis and hemorrhoids are very probable cause of postiive stool-blood test nad if you had colonoscopy 2 years ago, then it is not likely that there is some other more serious colon lesions such as dysplastic polyp or tumor. However, it cant be ruled out for 100% without colonoscopy, In your age we recommend colonoscopy every 5 years to be done or if some new symptoms occur. If there is only microscopic blood in stool without weight loss, abdominal pain, constipation or anemia, then I dont think that colonoscopy is obligatory. If you have these symptoms then you should do it. Also, it woul dbe good to check tumor markers CA 19-9, CEA and AFP.
WIsh you good health. Regards
