Posted on Sat, 30 Apr 2016
Question: My husband just ejaculated red blood with a small blood clot present. He has no blood in his urine, no injuries, and no swelling or pain, etc. He is 68 years old and this is the second time this has happened. The first time was yesterday. Would you advise he see a urologist?

Brief Answer:
Needs at least a basic evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hi,Warm Welcome. I appreciate your trust in HCM.

I have thoroughly reviewed health query you raised, and well realize all of those concerns.

We term this phenomenon 'haematospermia', and the good news is it is almost always self-remitting,ie stops spontaneously on its own. However, in view of the fact that your husband is 68 years old, I'd suggest a baseline evaluation. This can take place after a visit to his Urologist who might do a digital rectal examination, and might request for a few tests like ultrasound for prostate and seminal vesicles, a uroflowmetry, a blood test called PSA if he things is s likely to be relevant. Most patients derive benefit from use of mild antiinflammatory drugs, antibiotics, and rest and sexual abstinence, and avoiding constipation. I hope your husband also will soon become completely well.
If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.
Best wishes.
