What Causes Bloating And Pain In The Stomach When Diagnosed With Hernia?

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Nov 2016
Question: For the last six days I have had a bloated feeling in my stomach. I also have had a pain in my rib cage. At times there is also pain in my stomach. Earlier in the week I also had a sore throat which has now gone away. This morning, for the first time, I had an attack where the ribs and stomach hurt rather intensely. I sat and the pain finally stopped about 5 minutes later. I also have a hernia which I have had for years si I did not think it was related. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Let me know if you have hiatal or abdominal hernia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your question.
I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

What I understand from your description, it seems like all your symptoms are related to bowel/stomach related.
I am not sure if the hernia you have is a hiatal hernia or abdominal? So please let me know about it because it is important.

The bowel is very sensitive to stress or food changes.

-- A good regime is to drink more then 2.5 liters water/day, to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and to try to avoid stress.

-- Continue using Prilosec because it is the treatment of the stomach problems. Will reduce the acid and therefore the pain.

-- Instead of having large portion meals, eat many meals during the day and in small amounts.
-- Raise the head-end of your bed during sleeping so the possible reflux will be avoided.

Maybe you have done all these, but these are general advises. Let me know your thoughts about these. Let me know more information about your problem (if there's any other details/further concerns).

Looking forward to your follow up question.

Regards,
Dr.Papaqako

I believe it is a hiatal hernia since it runs straight up from my belly button. I had an abdominal hernia removed about 17 years ago .

Brief Answer:
Possible abdominal hernia complication

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Thank you for the follow-up question.

The hernia that is visible is localized in the abdominal wall. Hiatal hernia its called when a part of the stomach slides though the diaphragma and causes shortness of breath, pain and stomach problems.

Seems like in your case you have abdominal hernia. You may have it for years, but it has the tendency to get worsen and sometimes may happen that a part of the small intestine gets stuck in the hernia sack and causes pain because of strangulation of the intestine. If this is the case you will need to take action as soon as possible.

So I would recommend to follow the advises in the previous answer and if the pain starts again, does not stop and gets worse, then go to the ER so they can do an ultrasound of the hernia and see what is going on.

Hope I have clarified you and answered your question.

Regards
