What Causes Black Eye After Trauma To The Head?

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Jun 2015
Question: My three year old daughter fell from a height of about eighteen inches at 11:30 this morning. She hit her head above the left eye. No sign of concussion (pupils dilate at same time, not lethargic, etc.) She had no pain when she moved her eyes or closed her eyes (still doesn't.) We immediately iced it for approximately twenty minutes. She took a short nap later and the swelling dissipated even more. However; over the last two hours her sore has continually swelled. It now looks as though it may have tripled in size (or more.) Her demeanor is still normal.

Brief Answer:
Hematoma

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

It looks like your daughter has black eye. It is common for someone to get black eye after trauma to the head as the blood tends to flow down and settle around the peri orbital region ( around the eye).
Continue to apply ice packs, the hematoma will resolve on its own in a couple of weeks.

However please note
Hematoma will need draining if it is
1. Blocking her vision
2. Becomes painful
3. Becomes infected and she starts spiking a fever

Any head injury I always recommend a CT scan of the head even if there are no neurological signs, I recommend the same to your daughter as well.

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me
