What Causes Big Swollen Knuckle On Finger?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Sep 2014
Question: my husband has a great big swollen knuckle on his middle finger on his right hand. This happened to him once before and he said it took about two months for it to heal and he wasn't working at the time so he didn't have to use it much. Now he is working full time in a wood yard and it hasn't went down any in a week. It's very painful and he can't stand for it to be touched. He has no medical insurance and is trying to find out what it could be. He said it's not broken because he didn't do anything to break it and again he said this happened one time before. It's also very red looking. We just can't afford to go to a doc and pay 180.00 to find out what it is and maybe what he can do for it to go down. Please try to help us figure out what this is. He has had gout in his feet for a long time but that has only flared up 1 time in several years. We also don't know if he can get gout in his knuckle... Thank you so much. I will be looking forwaed to your advice.

Brief Answer:
It could be an acute attack of gout.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

According to your description , pain and swelling over knuckle seems to be inflammatory in nature. It could be an acute attack of gout.
I advice him to give you rest to the part affected, take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin 1 tablet with food as and when required (upto 4 tablets daily) to reduce pain and inflammation.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

Take care
