What Causes Bald Spot At The Place Of Knot On Head Post Injury?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: I fell a couple of months ago and hit my head. I had a large knot (no broken skin, no headaches, no dizziness). The knot finally went away after about a month. I now have a quarter sized bald spot where the knot was. I read that the injury could have caused this. Correct? What is the likelihood that the hair will grow back, or worse, that the bald spot will spread? Do I need to see a medical professional? If so, what type?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic.
Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Siddiq-ul-abidin. I have read your question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

I am sorry that you had to undergo such incidence. Now, Coming to your queries, one by one.

Yes, it is quite possible that it might have been caused by trauma, and after healing of underlying soft tissue, if scar tissue is formed, it leads to a patch of hairless skin.

Now, as far as your concerns regarding its spread are concerned, it is not possible as scar tissue gets surrounded by area of fibrosis that limit it's spread any further. That is a kind of nature's defence mechanism for the body in response to wounds.

Now comes, the question of what to do next? The treatment options which are available now, mostly involve surgical or cosmetic procedures. And for that purpose, you need to consult available plastic surgeon. They can do, scar reduction surgeries, and these involve series of minor surgeries, involving cutting the surroundings of scar available and pulling margins gradually closer with every step of surgery.

Also that, if scar is very big, then plastic surgeon can give you opinion regarding hair transplantation in the scar, if that skin is not scarred enough to regrow hair.

I hope this answered your question. If you have more queries I am happy to answer.Otherwise close the discussion and rate my response.

Regards.
