What Causes Backache And Pain In The Kidney Area While On Advil?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Nov 2017
Question: For the last 3 nights I have been woken up with severe back pain bad enough to keep me from sleeping. I have no issues with my back throughout the day while sitting or standing, but when I lay down on my back or sides the pain is pretty bad. Advil does not quell the pain. The muscles seem to be soar around my kidney area, but it is not tender to touch nor do I have issues with urinating, have a fever, or have any appetite loss. The mattress I have is not great, but it seems firm enough and I have purchased a 2" memory foam pad but it did not help. Could this problem be from the mattress?

Brief Answer:
The mattress could have a role to play. Lumbar spondylosis possible.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query. Your back pain could indeed be due to the mattress and improper posture, thus leading to muscle spasm. Hot compress should provide relief. The vicious cycle of pain and spasm needs to be broken and I would insist you to take paracetamol or acetaminophen 500 mg two tablets together twice or thrice daily for next 3 days. This should ease the problem and make it go away. If it does not spondylosis could be another cause to consider. I would insist you to get a X Ray of Lumbosacral spine (AP and lateral) done and to see a physical therapist with the reports. Based on the findings he would be able to demonstrate to you proper exercises that should provide relief.

Feel free to write back.
