What Causes An Itchy Rash On Right Leg?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 May 2016
Question: I just developed what appears to be a rash or skin irritation on the front of my right leg...this just showed up today....I previously had a small patch of irritation just below my right knee that was dry and itchy. But today when I got home from work, I noticed this skin rash...it appears to be under the skin.

Brief Answer:
fungal infection or allergic eczema but provide more information.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.

I have read your query and reviewed the attachments.

From the first two pictures,it appears to be fungal infection or allergic eczema since skin looks reddish, dry, scaly and peeling, so I would keep this possibilities first here.

From the 3rd picture, the red pin point dots could also be scabies rashes or less unlikely petechieas but I am NOT 100% sure because it is slightly difficult to tell from only pictures in this particular case.

And hence let me know some more information regarding this rashes,

Is there any itching or burning?
Any history of skin allergy?

Generally, topical steroid (clobetasol) cream with anti-fungal (miconazole) combination might be helpful in this kind of cases.

Oral antihistamines (levocetrizine 10 mg or fexofenadine 120mg ) twice daily will also be a good choice to resolve allergic symptoms.

You will need to see dermatologist for complete clinical examination of these rashes to find out the exact underlying cause.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

The only part that itches is up just below the right knee. And the itching of that comes and goes and has been ongoing for several months.

The pinpoint dots just occurred yesterday. I was at work and underneath a house. I was kneeled down and my shin was in contact with the ground. I felt a little burning in the arch of my foot and slightly up my leg but believed that was just from muscle tightness.

I did notice that the ground was very damp, had a musty smell and there was also evidence of recent rodent activity (droppings).

Brief Answer:
likely fungal infection or allergic eczema

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for sharing more information.

From the more facts that you have shared here, these rashes are likely to be due to either fungal infection or allergic eczema.I would keep these two possibilities here as we had discussed earlier.

The pinpoint dots could be allergic for which oral antihistamine tablets will be helpful.

So, I recommend you to consult a dermatologist who may prescribe topical steroid with anti-fungal cream or ointment after thorough clinical examination of rashes.

Regards,

Dr.Sandip Kabra
