Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: HI Doc,
From past 2 weeks whenever i get up both of my eyes are filled with sticky liquid. This gets cleared when i put water in my eyes. Iam concerned regarding the same. I have the habit of putting water in my eyes after washing the face. Also, Iam taking Censpram Lite (Escitalopram-10mg and Clonazepam 0.25mg). Iam not sure if this is due to the intake of these tablets or putting water in my eyes or something serious. Please Advice?

Escitalopram can cause discharge from the eyes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic.

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that you are having symptoms of sticky liquid in the eye on waking up in the morning.

The tablets you are taking in the from of Clonazepam and Escitalopram, particularly Escitalopram is known to cause side effects on the eye like dry eyes, eye irritation, redness, discharge from the eye.
Hence the drugs you are on may be responsible for your symptoms. The other causes are infection of conjunctiva like conjunctivitis and infection of lacrimal sac.
Hence as of now you can use artificial tears eye drops and if the condition does not responds you need to consult your doctor for further evaluation and treatment accordingly.

Later depending on the response further treatment is required particularly in lacrimal sac related infections.

This problem is not related putting water to the eye.
