What Causes Abdominalpain?

Question: My 29 yr old son has had 8 out of 10 abdominal pain for over two weeks. He finally went to an ER in San Francisco. He had a test drawn for H.Pylori last week the first time he went to the ER. The doctor said the results never came in! I'm an RN for 35 years I can see maybe two to three days for the results. That's ridiculous that the doctor doesn't have the results don't you think? His eosinophil count is 10 times the normal level. Which can imply many dx. They inserted an iv and gave him morphine and discharged him with a prescription for Percocet and gave him a referral for a gastroenterologist . My daughter died from an allergic reaction when she was 19 and of course I'm worried sick that he won't get the proper care because he was in the process of getting some sort of health insurance that he applied for but the information on cost never was sent to his email and shortly after he got sick. There is a family history of stomach, pancreatic , and colon cancer. I read that an increase in vitamins E and C can decrease the high level of eosinophils. He has been a vegetarian for about seven years. I would think his diet is full of those vitamins already. He hasn't been any where to pick up some kind of parasite. I told him to go to an allergist as well because for years he has been stuffed up and expectorating phlegm. I think he is allergic to dust, pollen, and maybe mites which cause an increase in eosinophil count. However that wouldn't cause him to have the acute stomach pains. And if the doctor did feel there was a high probability that he does have H. pylori shouldn't he have just started him on antibiotics? I told him to get some pepto Bismal to coat the lining of his stomach to ease the pain. Was that wrong?

Brief Answer: Allergy/GI tests are necessary... Detailed Answer: Hi, I have gone through the medical history of your son and feel sorry for the situation he is in. To my opinion, he is having 2 main health problems: - allergy - gastro-intestinal Further tests are necessary to determine the true problem: - allergy tests - upper endoscopy during which, tissue of the stomach will be taken and run biopsy and other tests for H.pylori - abdominal ultrasound - examination of stool for ova/parasites. Although he has not gone anywhere to pick up parasites, as nowadays, people are traveling, he might have met or deal with people infected or carries of ova/parasites. Although you have a family history of cancer and allergic reaction, this does not necessary mean that your son is going to have such problems. That's why such tests are necessary to determine the right diagnosis. He can continue pepto Bismol, and I advise to also take: - PPIs drugs (omeprazole, lansoprazole, etc.) - probiotics - avoid coffee, energetic drinks, alcohol, smoking, citrus and other foods/drinks that can make his stomach upset. Hope it helped! Do not hesitate to write me back if you have further queries! Dr.Klerida
