What Causes Abdominal Pain, Severe Bloating And Vomiting?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 May 2015
Question: Abdominal pain, started a week ago with severe bloating and pain that subsided in about a day. Also not able to sleep until last Thursday, on Friday I felt great. Didn't sleep well that night or the next and by Sunday-2days ago-the pain was terrible, with some vomiting and diarrhea. At that time it felt like sharp gas pain up and down both sides of my abdomen, usually starting on the right. I finally got some sleep last night but every time I get up and move the pain hits across the bottom of the ribs and down the sides, followed by a lot of gurgling everywhere. I've kept down some broth today, no bowel movement or vomiting, just pain when I get up.

Brief Answer:
Gastroenteritis (infection) possible, if persists other diagnostics needed

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

in your case a normal infection (gastroenteritis through virus or bacteria) is possible, which should cure itself within 3-5 days. However if this persists longer, in your case i would recommend ultrasound abdomen and stool samples for bacteria and blood sample for inflammation, liver and gall bladder to rule out any other abdominal condition like gall bladder or pancreas problems.

Hope this is helping you , if you have any clarificatons you can get back to me, if this was helpful please kindly rate my answer. Best regards

How should I treat this? I've been drinking broth, it still hurts badly when I get up and walk or bend...how long will it take to resolve if it is gastroenteritis or gastritis? I will add that I had a 10-day round of augmentin for sinusitis that ended about a week before this started. Don't know if that's relevant?

Brief Answer:
Augmentin side effect possible

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

You should have a diet with light soup, no fatty foods, no milk products. Since it is possible that your bacterial flora is affected by the antibiotic, you should take some probiotics like mutaflor, omniflor or Floranex or BD Lactinex or similar. The pain near the ribs could be due to acidity so Omeprazole will help it. You can up the dosage to 40mg, but do it after informing your physician. Also take only liquid diets best would be clean natural fruit juices. For bloating and pain use a preparation that has dicyclomine and simethicone. Please ask your doctor for this prescription as these are not OTC. It will work beautifully for the pain and bloating.

One more thing: I was having very uncomfortable leg cramps that stopped after the last bout of diarrhea; since I had some broth yesterday and I can feel a little activity--no movement--in my bowels again, they're back. I've never experienced this before and wonder if it's just because of the severity of the gastric symptoms?

Brief Answer:
Leg cramps possible through potassium problem, fluid intake advisable

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient, leg cramps can be through loss of potassium through diarrhea, may also be a pain phenomenon that comes with infections. Ibuprofen medication can help as advised through your doc, also enough fluid intake, best is herbal tea.

Best regards
