What Causes Abdominal Pain Despite Protonix Usage For Stomach Ulcer?
Question: 6 weeks ago I saw a doctor about pain in my abdomen under my breastbone that wrapped around my left side to my left shoulder. After blood work and x-rays the doctor believed I have a stomach ulcer. He put me on Protonix and ordered for me to have an upper GI. I have been working out of town and have not had time for the Upper GI. I am still experiencing pain and some tenderness in my abdomen, is that normal for ulcers? There have been no symptoms of bleeding and I did not have the H pylori bacteria present. Also, I stopped taking prevacid in order to take this new medication for acid reflux/ulcer. But the acid is still bad. Should I be taking prevacid along with protonix? When should I be concerned about the ulcer, what are signs of it getting worse? How long do ulcers usually take to heal? Is pain at six weeks normal?
Also, I have completely changed my diet. I am eating healthy and have lost 30 pounds since this began. I have cut out all sugars, caffeine, sodas, fried food, etc. Is there anything else I can do to treat it?

Hi, thanks for the question. For ulcer the treatment you are taking in correct. Protonix should be had twice daily half an hour before meals. This treatment should be continued for three to six months. Please do get an Ultrasound abdomen done as also the Upper GI Endoscopy done to be sure what you are dealing with. So please follow what the doctor said and get both these done. Also, dont lie down for half an hour after you have completed a meal. Do let us know the test results and we can advice you further.
