Posted on Mon, 7 Mar 2016
Question: I have been having indigestion today. I take 60 mg of Dexilant. This afternoon I took a dose of Carafate. I have been having a tight feeling in my throat. When I breathe very deep my breath feels like it is being cut short. Is this the muscle tightening up?

Brief Answer:
heart risks?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
This could be some esophageal spasm causing the sensation of breath being cut off. That can occur with reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus.
It is also possible that if you have severe reflux you may have aspirated some stomach acid down into your trachea and that is cutting off your breath.
However, shortness of breath can be a sign of heart disease so if you have risk factors for heart disease like diabetes, hypertension, smoking, high blood pressure and/or a family history of heart disease then you should see your doctor right away.
