What Causes A Red Bump Near The Armpit?

Posted on Thu, 18 May 2017
Question: My 23 year old daughter found a red bump on the side of her breast near her underarm. It is not itchy or too tender but is red, warm to the touch, and about the size of a nickel. She is in a panic and lives across the country from me. What do I suggest she do?

Brief Answer:
It could be lymph node swelling or abscess.

Detailed Answer:
Hello..
Thanks for trusting us for your health related queries.

The information shared by you along with the attached picture is suggestive of either a lymph node swelling or abscess.

Abscess occur because of the micro-organism present on the skin. Don't worry, it is treatable.

Lymph node swelling results because of infection present in the lymph node of that region. sometimes infection to the lymph nodes to that area can occur because of transfer of the infection from the breast. Again don't worry it is treatable.
Both has to be examined in detail before making a diagnosis.

Advice-
1. Visit a nearby Gynecologist to rule out any infection of the breast. If there is no infection in the breast she may refer to a general surgeon.

2. Or you may directly visit a general surgeon to have a look at the problem as per your convenience.

Today my daughter went to an urgent care facility (she has yet to have an established doctor, since she recently moved). The attending physician said he did not think the bump was related to a lymph node swelling and ordered an ultrasound for her. Appropriate next step? Should she instead seek out a gynecologist?

Brief Answer:
Do ultrasound and revisit the treating doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello again...
As per information shared by you that the nearby physician already examined your daughter and told that its not the lymph nodes and advised ultrasound, so go for it.

After doing ultrasound revisit treating doctor, so that he/she have a look and advise accordingly.
There is no need to seek a gynecologist.
