What Causes A Movable Lump In The Left Rib Cage?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Nov 2016
Question: I was randomly feeling around my left rib cage and felt a moving lump that's not protruding outside the skin to be noticeable. I almost feel like there's no way I could have found this unless I was searching.
It doesn't hurt, it isn't tender, it's a bit firm softer than the bone to touch and about the size of one of the matching ribs.

I'm curious as to what this is? A muscle? or possibly something I should get checked out.

Brief Answer:
Commonest reasons are either a lipoma or a sebaceous cyst

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/34 - felt a moving lump on randomly feeling around left rib case - non tender - size of matching rib - and as explained...
The most probable causes are with explanation:
Lipoma: Freely XXXXXXX - neither attached to the skin or deeper structures - non tender - smooth surface and globular - can have additional ones at other parts of the body.
Sebaceous cyst: Almost similar but there can be a black spot or a punctum as we call with which it is attached to the skin making the mobility restricted.

Certainly yes, you should get this checked out and if possible get it removed for 2 reasons:
- you get rid of the lump which is not a normal part of the body.
- you get a definite histopathological diagnosis as to what it is and whether to worry about or not.

Ultrasound with FNAC can act in the similar way to get a proper diagnosis.

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper decision and cure.

My friend told me it was a hanging rib and it's connected to my ribcage

it's not a lump that you can see protruding. If you press your finger into the skin you can feel what I thought was a lump, but it was a bone, which is my hanging rib I think.

Detailed Answer:
Is it in continuity as if a rib, which can be traced to the spine - without any break in continuity?
