Brief Answer:
Stress can cause such problem

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam,

Anxiety can cause sleep disturbance. You have suffered in past for short duration from theses symptoms. This time it has been lasted more than 3 weeks.

Insomnia can be due to some physical or psychological reason.

In caring of handicapped husband, you may be feeling stress. This stress can cause interrupted sleep sometime. After that not being able to sleep for 2-3 days regularly, insomnia itself becomes stress. Due to unsatisfactory sleep and thoughts of not being able to sleep enough you feels stress which in turn can cause more sleep disturbance.
If you do not have any physical problem, this is likely cause.

As age progresses after 60 sleep requirement of body also reduces naturally. But it should be at least 6 hours per day.

Melatonin can help in sleep. If you are getting enough response with that continue with permission of your doctor.

Otherwise two options are there.

1.With melatonin follow some important measures for good sleep called , 'Sleep Hygiene'. You can find the same on this link: http://sleepfoundation.org/ask-the-expert/sleep-hygiene

2.If melatonin is not effective, drug from benzo group like clonazepam or lorazepam would help.

Discuss this aspect with your doctor and change medicines if needed.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
