What Causes A Bump At The Base Of The Little Toe?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Nov 2016
Question: Hi I am male, 63 years old in good shape. I run our family ranch and a big game hunting business. I do a lot of walking. Recently I have severe pain on my left foot on the part of the foot that sticks out slightly at the base of the little toe. I tried corn removers and callus removers, but it seems to be a bump below the skin like a bone spur that gets really irritated especially after a good hike on uneven ground. The pain is extreme and constant and sensitive to touch. The bone area sticks out farther on my left foot than my right foot.

Brief Answer:
Get confirmation and proper treatment as detailed below

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/63 - noted all the history - severe pain - left foot - at the base of little toe - like a bone spur - gets irritated after a good hike on uneven ground - constant, extreme and sensitive to touch - bone area sticks out further - tried corn, callus removers ...

As per the history your have provided, this looks to be a bony spur.
This can be confirmed by X-ray well and helps differentiate from corn/callus.
Please get an opinion of a General Surgeon/Podiarist to get a confirmed diagnosis and Surgical removal as per the final diagnosis.
Please stop applying anything locally as it changes the integrity of the skin of the most weight bearing part of the body.
You may till then try the following:
Anti-inflammatory medicine like Ibuprofen if it suits you.
Warm fomentation in super-saturated Saline solution made at home by adding common salt to the water - use the same solution every time, no need to change even though it may appear murky later on.
Leg elevation in lying down position.
Avoid uneven ground, in fact take rest till well diagnosed and treated.

I hope this answer helps you.
Please give feedback.
