What Cause Blood In Urine Inspite Of Having Antibiotics?

Posted on Mon, 12 May 2014
Question: Hi, I have recently come back from Australia and during the last week I started passing blood in my urine. I ended up passing a lot of blood, to the point where it didn't look like urine and just looked like someone had emptied a pint of blood in the toilet (sorry to be so honest!!) After my 26 hour flight my mum took me straight to the hospital (it was a Sunday so no GP surgerys open) where the doctor diagnosed me with a UTI, took a sample of my pee & gave me antibiotics. A few days later the results came back and my GP surgery rang to say there was no infection but a high amount of red and white blood cells in my urine. I went back to the doctors where they gave me stronger antibiotics for 7 days (there was still a lot of blood in my urine) and I had to do another sample, although my doctor said it was likely a UTI due to my age (I am 18.) I am waiting on the results of my 2nd sample and although the antibiotics have cleared up the burning sensation, I am still passing a bit of blood (not as much), have back & abdominal pain aswell as nausea. What on earth is going on?!

Brief Answer: stones . continue antibiotics, hydration.USG SCAN Detailed Answer: Hi, I went through the query and understood your concern. Be relaxed. The most probable cause for your symptoms is mucosal injury in the urethra. This may be due to passing of stone injuring the mucosa and leading to bleeding. Once injury the chance of infection is more after some time. So initial test has shown no bacteria and hence no infection but only bleeding. The burning sensation may be due to UTI or even due to mucosal injury. Since you are getting back and abdomen pain along with nausea with the history of burning micturition and bleeding, I advice you to get done USG abdomen and pelvis once to rule out ureteric or renal colicky. Mean time continue antibiotics, have plenty of oral fluids and antispasmodic drugs like buscopan with NSAID will help in relieving current pain if due to stones. I hope this information helps you. Feel free to ask for any further queries. I will be glad to answer them. Wish you faster recovery and good health. Regards

Hi, Finished my antibiotics, no pain anymore and the resumts from my re-test again show no infection. There is still a bit of bleeding and i have abdominal pain with nausea but my back is really painful in the lower right side. Im drinking plenty of fluids but dont like taking NSAIDs so i am trying to grin and bear it! What should I do? My mother is staring to worry as she thinks it might be to do with the amount of alcohol i drink. What could be wrong?

Brief Answer: renal or ureteric calculi Detailed Answer: Hi, Be relaxed. As I told before, you require an ultrasound scan of abdomen and pelvis for diagnosis of your problem. Mean time continue plenty of oral fluids and antispasmodic drugs like buscopan with or without NSAID will help in relieving current pain if due to stones. The next management depends on the size of stone if causing problem. Also plenty of water with lime helps in reducing the inflammatory reactions around the stone and its passage. This is not due to alcohol. With the history the main suspect is stone. I hope this information helps you. Wish you faster recovery. Regards
