Question: my son has been on trileptal for for going on 15 years. he has not had a seizure in over 12 years. Our doctor thinks he has no more problems and wants to take him off the medicine. my problem is I am thinking the reason he has not had a seizure is because he takes the medicine regularly

Brief Answer:
Medicines may be stopped after proper tapering.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

If you would have presented to me as an outpatient with this clinical situation,I would have told you that 'medicines may be stopped after proper taper'.I agree with your treating doctor's opinion on this. Even if on medicines,12 years seizure free interval is a long gap and its worth to try stopping the medicines.Possible,he may not have a seizure even after stopping Trioptal.

Hope it helps. If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.

Brief Answer:
To prevent seizure recurrence.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

Its a protocol to taper off the antiepileptic medicines before finally stopping them because,if they are stopped abruptly without tapering to a lower dose,it results in increased chances of seizure recurrence.

I am here to answer all your queries, gladly.
