What Are The Teething Symptoms In A Child And Are Any Tests Required When The Child Is Experiencing Recurrent Ezcema?

Question: Hello doctor, It's regarding my daughter's feeding issues.

As arranged we had been to a Pediatrician. She checked and said she is healthy. Her weight was gained in line with usual percentile (she is on 2nd percentile).

After discussing history, the doctor was of opinion that she does not have reflux or milk allergy. She said on and off occurrence of eczema is due to dry skin.

The doctor advised us to reduce the medications gradually. She said give renitidine only once a day and she prescribed liquid omeprazole on our request but of lower dose.

We asked her whether repeat stool test, ultrasound etc necessary to rule out any medical condition. She said this elevated calprotectin is not a concern. She did not advise any other tests and said we do not want to over investigate.

Well, we were bit relieved after her visit. We stopped renitidine and are awaiting liquid omeprazole as it is not readily available and pharmacy will contact us once it is ready.

After stopping renitidine and omeprazole we noticed that her milk intake has dropped slightly. She is still sleep feeding. Last three days she is little different. She cried little more than before, looks annoyed, wakes up from deep sleep and cries and then goes to sleep again in 5-10 minutes, makes gagging noise with sometime tongue out, clears throat often, coughs now and then.

We called GP and have got appointment for Monday. We will discuss these new behavior.

We thought this new behavior could be teething but her gums does not look hard or different. Last two days she has not done her usual poo. Only little with more paste like instead of little more soft.

I am still worried why she has this feeding problem. She has shown interest in baby rice and takes 1-2 teaspoons of it with her usual milk.

I want to do full tests of her. I know NHS will not suggest any tests but I am ready to go private again.

Please let me know what tests I can ask to rule out any medical condition she may be having. After tests if nothing comes then only I can convince my mind that nothing is wrong and let her behave in her way towards feeding.

Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
I am sure no further testing is needed. You just need to be patient.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Thank you for following up on my earlier advice. I think the Pediatrician is probably right, in that nothing serious is brewing. I would keep trying more and more non-milk based foods and cereals rather than keeping on about milk.
The change in feeding and sleeping behavior may be a passing phase, and I would urge you not to do anything more but keep documenting her behavior.

Let us stay in touch. Write back in a few days with the progress on your baby.

Thanks.

Dr Taher
