Brief Answer:
proctitis is inflammation of the rectum

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Proctitis is inflammation of the lining of the rectum.

The symptoms that may occur are: (1) feeling of rectal fullness

(2)anal and rectal pain

(3)diarrhea

(4)frequent or continuous urge to have a bowel movement

(5)pain in the lower left abdomen

(6)passing mucus

(7)rectal bleeding

(8)itching of the anus may also sometimes occur

There are different possible causes such as: (1) infection- there are viruses, bacteria, parasites that can cause this problem

(2)immunodeficiency- impairment of the immune system are a cause. Antibiotics can affect the immune system and affect bacterial flora and this may be the way that they caused your problem

(3)ischemia- reduced blood supply to the area can result in inflammation

(4)toxins

(5)inflammatory bowel disease

(6)vasculitis- this is inflammation of the blood vessels in the rectal area. This inflammation can cause protitis

(7)radiation

Treatment

The treatment depends on the cause.

In general the use of sitz baths, stool softeners, low residue diet and the use of the anti inflammatory medication are helpful.
Sitz baths mean sitting in warm water (not hot) for 10 to 15 minutes. The water may contain tablet salt or epson salt.

You can try these in addition to your medication to see if it has an effect.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Thanks very much; this is helpful. In your experience, how long does this last typically if treated with anti inflammatory meds immediately?

Brief Answer:
improvement should start in 2 to 3 days

Detailed Answer:
HI

If your symptoms are related to the over use of the antibiotics only then use of the anti inflammatory meds should result in some improvement within 2 to 3 days. The improvement would continue over a 1 to 3 week period.

I know my food intake is restricted, but when can I resume a normal diet?

Answered by Dr. Michelle Gibson James (11 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
with symptom improvement

Detailed Answer:
HI

When the symptoms start to resolve (normally after a few days), you can resume your normal diet.
The only main diet change usually with treatment is the use of a low fiber diet, this is to decrease any strain in the rectum and anus.
