What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Spinal Stenosis?

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Apr 2017
Question: hello, just a general question; last year I had back surgery for 'Spinal Stenosis' . I understand that 'Stenosis' can occur in various organs. Is having Stenosis in one location put you in a higher risk for other locations in the future ?? And is there anything you can 'adjust' ( diet, etc... ) to prevent ?

Brief Answer:
Regular exercise and physiotherapy can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Spinal stenosis s an age related degenerative change. It occurs due to repetitive overload or stress to the disc & it increases the risk of disc herniation & then spinal canal stenosis.
For this condition you have to do stretching & strengthening exercises in which you have to stretch tight muscle & strengthen weakened ones which will alleviate stress on facet joint and disc.
- Maintain optimum body weight,if you are obese
- Avoid lifting heavy weights as it imparts more strain on your back
- Change your daily activities so that you avoid movements that can cause pain, especially bending forward and lifting as it will worsen the disc protrusion. if you want to bend forwards, do it with your hips and knees flexed.
Remedial exercises to strengthen the spine are very important to restore normal spinal movements and muscle strength. The main aim of exercise is to encourage mobility, reduce muscle spasm, prevent further deterioration in the muscles and speed recovery.
I hope this answers your query.

thanks. yes it takes some time to fully recover with the back .

However. does having 'stenosis' in one area make you more likely to have it in other areas ?? (ie heart stenosis , etc... )

Thanks for you time. Regards XXXXXXX Sparkman

Brief Answer:
Not related.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Stenosis in spine is not related to stenosis in the heart. in heart the stenosis happens due to atherosclerosis. Spinal stenosis does not predispose you to heart stenosis or stenosis at other sites.
Hope my answer is helpful.
