What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Acid Reflux?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Nov 2015
Question: HI my wife has a cough for about 3 months now. An ENT seems to think that acid reflux might be the cause. However a change in diet and sleeping positions have produced only a very slight reduction in her cough. She has had a sinus scan to determine,if any sinus infections exist. The scan showed no abnormalities. She does take daily Spriva for a mild degree of asthma. She was also tested by an allergy specialist and was told no allergies exist in her system. Any suggestions on how to treat this condition as it has definitely affected her quality of life! Also she had one third of her right lung removed due to a diagnosis of stage one lung cancer. Very recent lung scans showed no cancer or other abnormality. She has also been diagnosed with Barrets syndrome.

Brief Answer:
Its be still Asthma or Acid reflux.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Greetings from Dr Divakara P
Thanks for posting your query.

I went through your query. In my opinion there are two possibilities that can cause your wife's problem.

1. Asthma: Sometimes asthma can just cause cough without any breathing difficulty. Its called cough variant asthma. I recommend you ask your doctor for a prescription of Salmetrol+Fluticasone inhaler .

With the use of this inhaler if your wife's symptom gets relieved then it proves our diagnosis.

2. Acid reflux: See the diagnosis of Barrets increases the possibility of acid reflux. See for acid reflux your wife has done only diet and lifestyle changes but not taken any medication.

She can try 3 week course of Proton pump inhibitor with a prokinetic ( example : Rabeprezole+domperidone) and see if improvement in cough happens . ( Try this if not trying inhalers )

3. Third possibility could be Tuberculosis: In this regard I recommend few tests for her . Kindly get these tests and revert back.

Sputum AFB, ESR and Monteaux test.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarification feel free to ask.

Regards.
