What Are The Side Effects Of Hydroxyurea While On Plavix?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Jul 2022
Question: I have been prescribed hydroxyurea to treat elevated platelet count(600,000). What can you tell me about side effects. Also, I am to take it with Plavix. Is there any alternative to hydroxyurea? Also with this limited amount of information, what would be the recommended dosage?
Are there foods that would assist in lowering platelet count? I want to be healthy but I don't want to take unnecessary drugs. Thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
Predominant side effect include infection

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

There is no significant drug interaction with Plavix and Hydroxyurea.

The recommended dose is 15 mg/kg PO Day.

The basic side effects are propensity to develop infection particularly bacterial infection.

Bone marrow biopsy report will help to know the cause of high platelet count.

Alternative medication can be decided only after bone marrow biopsy results.

There are no specific foods that will help to lower platelet count.

Hydroxyurea is generally the right medication on your case.

Post your further questions if any.
Thank you.
