Question: I was taking statin drugs to control my cholesterol. I had to come off those because of muscle leg pain and discomfort. then I was changed to Zetia which caused the same side effects so my doctor prescribe Finofibrate/HCTZ. Is there a side effect in this drug that will cause the same problems. since I have been on this my muscle leg pain has decreased considerabally. I want to make sure this drug is not the same as the statin drugs?

Brief Answer:
It's not the same group as statins...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

Fenofibrate/HCTZ does not fall into the same group as statins. It has shown less risk to develop muscle leg pain. However, is the pain will get worst, should report it to your doctor as soon as possible.

The common side effects of Fenofibrate/HCTZ include flu-like symptoms (runny nose, generalized fatigue) and gastrointestinal issues.

I advise to get your liver/kidney panel scheduled on regular basis (once 3 months) to catch liver/kidney problems in time.

At the end, although fenofibrate/hctz is not the same as statin drug, it can affect your body skeletal muscles as statins do.

Please bare in mind that all the drugs have their side effects, the one mentioned above are those who have been commonly reported. While, you might face any new effect that is not mentioned here (Or on drug leaflet). Once noted, should report to your doctor to stop using it.

Do not forget to continue lifestyle and diet changes as they are also very important in stabilizing your cholesterol levels.

Hope it answered to your queries!
