What Are The Side Effects Of Alendronate?
Question: I have osteoporosis and was prescribed Alendronate 70mg tabs. Then adviced not to take them. Infusion was prescribed then. I have verices in esophagus. What side effects can I expect?

Alendronate can cause severe gastritis and since you have esophageal varices , you may have bleeding in gut due to alendronate. This effect of alendronate is only local so other medicine of this group can be given through injections. That is probably the reason why injection( infusion) was prescribed.

Please let me know which particular medicine is being infused. Some medicines like Inj Ibandronate can be given without any major side effects while medicines like zolidronic acid are to be given with lot of caution.

I am not sure what medicine it is. I only know that it is for Reclast Infusion.

Reclast is zolidronic acid.
Normally I would fet kidney function tests and if they are normal, I will go for infusion.
Before infusion I give one bottle of normal saline to adequately hydrate my patients. Fever is to be expected after infusion - will be controlled with paracetamol only.
