default
Posted on Mon, 19 Dec 2016
Question: Hi I was chewing on some flexible plastic (It was about 1cm long and 0.3cm wide) and almost breathed it in. I think I swallowed it but I'm not sure. Will I be ok?

Hello XXXXXXX

If you swallowed this small piece of flexible plastic, it should go through your digestive system and you'll poop it out. If it was small and flexible, it won't puncture your intestines. The worst might be a mild tummy ache.

If you did develop bad abdominal pain, then you should go to the A and E where you should have an Xray of the abdomen. Plastic doesn't usually show up the way metal does, but the doctor's might be able to see where it is at and any problem based on what the overall X-ray looks like.

Inhaling it would be a different story and would require removal of it. If you are breathing fine, and no cough, it is unlikely that you inhaled it.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.

How can I tell if I have inhaled it? Im a smoker so I do tend to cough a fair bit.

I hope I have just swallowed it. Thats taught me a lesson! After I tried to throw it up it feels like there is something at the back of my throat. I have drunk some water and coughed but I can still feel it. Have I just made my throat sore?

If you inhaled it, you would have some difficulty breathing or more of a cough than usual as your body would be trying to expel it.

If you think there is any chance that you could have inhaled it, then do go in to be seen. The doctor can listen to your lungs, and if there is something there that shouldn't be, he/she will hear it.

If you feel like you can get it back up, go ahead, it shouldn't hurt your throat much other than making it a bit sore for a day or two.

If it feels like it is stuck in the throat though, then do go in. The doctor can look inside and retrieve it. Alternatively, you can take a piece of bread soaked in a little milk and swallow that which can help push it down the esophagus. But that would not be my first recommendation as it would be better if it can actually be retrieved.
