Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: I am a paramedic, recently as I was demonstrating a insulin pen needling and cartridge refill technique to a HIV patient ,even though I was extra cautious about the procedure, the used 24 '' needle suddenly whisked of my finger giving a small cut and a drop f blood flowed,in my nervousness I washed the part after draining out the blood with dettol, cidex, insider ,dettol and what not.finally I reported the matter to our doctor who advised me to take tab.viraday for 1 month and do a blood test again for HIV 1&2(the initial test was negative).do you feel I should have added something to the treatment or should I do it now?(it is exactly 2 weeks now and my profalaxis treatment is as per recommendation of my doctor). Kindly opine.

Brief Answer:
There is no extra treatment to be added at this time!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

Management of this accidental exposure to blood has been well managed. Rinsing thoroughly and taking prophylactic treatment is the best way to go. For now, stay positive, be optimistic and try to relax. I know you are concerned about what the outcome would be but very few persons would finally get infected after appropriate management of such an exposure.

I hope this addresses your query fully. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
