Question: What are the possible causes of a need for a greater than normal amount of sleep? I also have Afib (under management).

I can understand your concern and I will try to explain some info regarding your concern

The key to overcoming excessive sleepiness is to determine its cause. There are several sleep-related problems that can leave you yawning the day away.

There are several causes that might cause disturbances in sleep cycle

Among the more common causes of excessive sleepiness are:
Sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, depression etc

Nevertheless the first think that we recommend to our patients is that the hygein of sleep should be follow with some rules

Do not spend too much time in bed

Maintain a consistent sleep/wake time

Get out of bed if unable to fall asleep

Restrict naps to 30 minutes in the late morning or early afternoon

Exercise regularly

Spend more time outside, especially late in the day

Increase overall light exposure

Eat a light snack (i.e. milk, bread) before bed

Avoid caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol after lunch


If even with the above there will be any improvement in your sleep than you should probably be examined more for the causes I mentioned above
