Question: Hi, I was wondering whether protected oral sex has any risk of STI/HIV transmission, ensuring there is no skin-skin contact?

Brief Answer:
should not be any risk

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If there is no skin to skin contact there should be very little risk of infection. However, some STDs like herpes an be transmitted through one layer of latex, but this is very rare. For example if I had to examine someone with an active herpes outbreak I would use two pairs of gloves just to be safe. If you are not having skin to skin contact you should be safe.

Thank you! Also, what is the STI/HIV risk if you have unprotected oral sex but you are vaccinated for HPV?

Answered by Dr. Kathy Robinson (7 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
risks of oral sex

Detailed Answer:
If you are vaccinated for HPV then your risk of that infection is less. It is possible to get HIV or other STIs with oral sex, but less likely than with intercourse. Of course if there are sores or cuts on the mouth or genitals it increases the risk of transmission greatly
