What Are The Chances Of HSV 1 Transmission After Unprotected Sex?
Question: Hi there,
I recently had unprotected sex (oral and vaginal) with a partner who tested positive for HSV-1. In his HSV-1 IgG results he tested 46.80 type spec. He said it was nothing to worry about because he had a cold sore many years ago and has not had an outbreak since but I wanted to shed some light on my situation. Prior to him sending me his test results I was experiencing symptoms of a UTI so my doctor gave me antibiotics and they went away. I was also having symptoms of a yeast infection with a rash (no blisters however) that has also mostly subsided (I took the yeast infection pill two days ago.) I just wanted to make sure these symptoms weren't herpes and was also wondering what my chances are of contracting HSV-1 orally or genitally if my partner claims he hasn't seen symptoms in years. I'm also trying to interpret the number (46.80) from his results. Thank you!

HSV 1 infection is a non venereal infection that anybody can acquire from childhood onward.
You mentioned that you had unprotected oral and vaginal sex. Regarding the oral sex, whether you did oral on him or he had on you. If you perform on him HSV 1 is unlikely to occur whereas it was performed on you then there is a likelihood for HSV 1 can be transmitted to you.(HSV 1 can be transmitted to genitals). If it is really true that he had no relapse in the recent years the this possibility is also very rare.
UTI and yeast infection not necessarily had any relation to HSV 1 and have to be followed up. Follow the advice of your physician sincerely, you will be alright.

It was performed from him to me which is why I'm concerned but I'm wondering about the test results. What do the numbers mean in terms of when he was infected or can we tell from the test results? I attached the document he sent me. He said he has had no recent outbreaks but again, tested positive (46.80) igg test. I'm wondering what the numbers mean.

I would not be worried much in this context. Number or the value of the test is not directly proportionate to the severity of the infection. Certain individuals body responds to certain infections (antigens) vehemently whereas certain other's are not so. Further the test is positive for HSV 1 IgG. And that indicates chronic infection and not recent. That is all. Unfortunately we cannot be able to time the duration of past infection from the test result.
When there is absence of any recent recurrence, it is quite unlikely to have viral shedding in saliva or from lips. So the chances of you getting infection according to me is quite remote.
