What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Protected Sex?

default
Posted on Thu, 25 Jun 2015
Question: I had sex with a commercial sex worker last night. The condom slipped off briefly when she sat on top of me. We immediately stopped any further activity. How significant is my HIV risk? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
HIV risk very slim to none

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

with that very short contact without any further unprotected actvity your hiv risk is usually almost none to zero. Just as example: if you had sex with her completely unprotected and she had active stage hiv your chances of getting infected would be 1-3%, just to give you any idea how far away from that you are. If you want to make this 100% sure, blood testing is possible in about 2-3 weeks. Most doctors would in cases like yours not recommed any post expostion medication.

Hope this is helping you , if you have any clarificatons you can get back to me, if this was helpful please kindly rate my answer. Best regards

Thank you for the clear and direct answer. I forgot to mention that I am in Haiti, which has a higher HIV rate than the United States. I do not think the slip of the condom was not long-lasting. Her hygiene appeared to be quite good, and she carries condoms.

Brief Answer:
Still low risk also in case of haiti since short exposition

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

thank you for clarifying, i could have asked that also about tha location.

This still does not change the facts referred to above, since that unprotected contact was so short. The chances that woman has hiv in active state are still very low. And even if (worst case) she had it AND it would be actually in highly replicative state (unlikely) chances of transmission with that short contact are very low.

Best regards if this was helpful please kindly rate my answer.

Thanks again for your clear and direct response doctor. I have one request for clarification. When you say the risk from the limited exposure is "usually almost none to zero", the words "none" and "zero" have identical meaning and do not indicate a range. Do I read this correctly as "usually almost none"? Thanks.
And, am I a safe in assuming there is no need for PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) or testing? I think along with the other clarifying question I just sent, that wraps it up. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Usually no pep recommendable due to very low risk (short) exposure

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

sorry about the unclear phrase. Let's put it this way: due to the very short contact it is just extremely unlikely to get an infection with hiv. PEP would therefor in your case mostly considered as overtherapy.

Best regards again,
