Question: I had a piece of my tongue cut out that was canser. Also the lymphnode removed and tested for canser. Which came back with o canser. Now the doc wants me to take a radiation treatment which is 6 weeks everyday of radiation. What are the side effects short term and long terms. And what are the permanant results? If I dont get the treatment what are the chances of me getting canser again? Radiation scares me. I really dont want to take this treatment. Thank you very much XXXXXXX XXXXX

Brief Answer:
Discuss it with doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
If I understand well, there were no positive lymph nodes. If this is right then radiation would be preventive measure. Tongue cancer has tendency to spread through cervical lymph nodes very quick so this is reason why radiation is recommended to reduce risk of cancer spreading. It is hard to calculate odds, but there are standard algorithms and your should discuss wiith your oncologist. The final decision is always yours. Side effects include skin redness, dry mouth, nausea and swallowing difficulties but usually patients can stand it very good.Wish you good health. Regards
