Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for your query.

Let me give you a few figures to help you figure out the probability of a pregnancy.
Emergency Contraceptive Pills have been studied for years and found to be highly effective when taken 72 hours or less after unprotected intercourse. Emergency Contraceptive pills are more effective the sooner they are taken after the incident of unprotected sex. If taken in less than 12 hours, there is only a .9% chance of becoming pregnant whereas is taken at the 60 to 72 hour point, there is a 4.3% chance of becoming pregnant. When taken between 72 and 120 hours, there is 63% chance of expected pregnancies that are prevented versus 89% when taken less than 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. No data have been identified relating the use beyond 120 hours.

The chances of conceiving are slightly high , if the unprotected intercourse occurred around the fertile days of ovulation.

That said and done, Unwanted 72 would be almost 90 % effective, if taken within 48 hours.

Please remember that these pills have various side effects, the common one being that they would alter the normal pattern of the menstrual cycle.

Your wife could have unexpected bleeding or spotting anytime before the expected period, and the period also could be delayed or preponed by a few days to a week.

These pills are not substitutes for regular contraceptive use.

Take care.

I would not call it " only " 90 % chances of success.
I would call it " only " 10 % chances of failure :)
If she skips her period, please have the pregnancy confirmed by a gynecologist at the earliest so that the doctor can examine her and prescribe medical abortion pills if you decide to go ahead with termination.
Take care.

Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (20 minutes later)
If medical abortion does not work, she might require surgical abortion.
Rarely, abortions can lead to tubal damage or endometrial damage, hence leading to infections or problems in conceiving in future.
Sometimes, an abortion is complicated by severe bleeding also.
In the best of medical guidance, these complications are rare.
