Question: Greetings. For many years I have had an area of skin below by knees that is especially dry and flakes when I scratch the area. There's no patchiness like excema or psoriasis, no itching, no discoloration or discomfort. Only dryness, moreso on the right leg the left. Sometimes I put cream on it. But I'm curious what causes an area to become dry compared with the rest of the leg area. What could be the cause for that? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Asteatotic eczema, no specific cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through your complaints and you could be having asteatotic eczema. It usually presents with dry scaly skin with minimal or absent itching. It also occurs in some individuals with increasing age and with no specific cause. You need to avoid hot water bath, use of harsh soaps and instead use a soap free cleanser and use a moisturizer containing white soft paraffin on the entire legs 2-3 times in a day.
This should resolve the dryness problem.

Thank you. The dry area is not visible and is only noticeable to the touch, and if I rub or scratch the area small particles of surface skin flake away. Would Acquaphor be useful, but it is simply something that arises here or there and can last for a while?

Asteatotic eczema can occur occasionally though it’s more common in winters and dry places.
