Posted on Wed, 13 Nov 2019
Question: The biopsy of the skin legion came back invasive squamous cell carcinoma..the location was below the nose.. does X-ray radiation or cell phone radiation cause these? What does the invasive part mean? Does that mean it is deep? Does it ever metasize to other places? I will download the pictures.. doing the mob treatment does that minimize scarring .. how bad will the scar be?

Brief Answer:
Regarding squamous cell carcinoma

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service.
I have gone through your query, reviewed the report and noted your concern.

Past history of exposure to X radiation is one of the risk factors for the development of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) later in life.

However, using cell phones is not linked to SCC. Invasive Carcinoma means it is no longer confined to the epidermis alone and has gained access to the dermis which has blood vessels and lymphatics and therefore there is a possibility that it might metastasize to distant sites.

Yours is a well-differentiated SCC as mentioned in the pathology report which has fewer chances of metastasis as compared to a poorly or undifferentiated SCC and therefore has a good prognosis. A skin cancer located in a high-risk area like the central face is only treated with MOHS as it not only has a high cure rate but also minimizes tissue loss as well as scarring.

Hope I have answered your query.

I had three panaramic xray in the last three years ..would that cause the scc? So when it is invasive it can get into my blood system and other organs? What test should I do to rule this out?

Brief Answer:
Regarding SCC

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
A small sized (10mm-20mm) and well differentiated SCC on face has a good cure rate with MOHS micrographic surgery. Your doctor would tell if you need to investigate for organ involvement which is usually not the case unless you have signs or symptoms of organ involvement.
Take care.
