Question: can a doctor tell by blood tests if you have fatty liver or cirrhosis of the liver
doctor
Answered by Dr. Shailja Puri (53 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Cirrhosis/fatty liver can be diagnosed by blood & radiological tests

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
A diagnosis of cirrhosis or fatty cannot be made by blood tests alone.
Blood test or more specifically liver function tests can tell whether there is any liver disease.
The possible cause of liver disease like alcohol, infection, obstruction, fibrosis etc. can be known from the liver function tests.
Fibrosis of liver can also be assessed by combination of blood tests known as which assess fibrosis of liver.
However, the exact cause of disease whether cirrhosis or fatty liver can be determined by combined clinical assessment, liver function tests and radiological examination like ultrasound, fibroscan etc.

Thanks and take care

my doctor told me i have alcoholic fatty liver from blood tests would that be accurate or could it be cirrhosis of the liver
doctor
Answered by Dr. Shailja Puri (4 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Presentation and blood tests are different for fatty liver and cirrhosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again,
Alcoholic liver disease can be determined by clinical history and further confirmed by blood tests.
Clinical features and blood tests are very different for fatty liver and cirrhosis so as to confuse both the entities.
fatty liver is the initial stage of alcoholic liver disease.
However, if alcohol is still continued despite fatty liver, it can progress to cirrhosis.
Thus, the best way to reverse the fatty changes and to prevent cirrhosis in liver is to abstain from alcohol.
