Suggest Ways To Remove Polyps From Large Intestine

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Feb 2015
Question: I had a colonoscopy 3 months ago. Dr. said it was negative but there was a flat polyp that he could not remove. Recommended another specialist who could use robotic surgery to get the flat polyp out for biopsy. Does this sound reasonable and is there such a procedure. I have also lost some weight in the last few months. Age 73.

Brief Answer:
Yes, this is reasonable. Polyp has to be removed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Every polyp should be removed from large intestine. No doubt in that. Polyp is a potential source of colon cancer. It is unknown how long it will take for a polyp to turn into a cancer. That is why it should not be left alone.
If a polyp can not be removed with colonoscopy, surgical removal of large intestine part with polyp is necessary. It can be done with laparoscopy or by robotic surgery indeed. It all depends which method is available in your region.
You were advised right by your doctor and this is very reasonable.

Weight loss is not caused by the polyp. It may be caused by several other than large intestine issues. The worst possibilities should be ruled out at first. That is why you should have most common cancers ruled out. Chest x-ray (or CT if you smoke), PSA level, CEA, CA 19-9 levels, abdominal CT, gastroscopy should be considered.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
