Question: Hi,
I gave birth to a 27 weeks preterm baby on 5 Aug. He was born 1.05 kg and remained in NICU for 56 weeks. He was no able to take direct feed, instead I used to pump out the milk and cup feed . For the first 2 months, I was able to maintain the breast milk supply. He is still not able to take breast feed directly. Now, the breast milk has almost finished. Please suggest the way to increase the supply again.

Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Increase supply with food and medication.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing to us about it.

First of all, Congratulation!

There are few things which may increase your milk production-

-First and foremost important thing is healthy and balanced diet rich in calcium, milk and milk product.
-You can eat fenugreek tea, sesame seed, rolled oats, barley, XXXXXXX Moong dal.
-Pump your breast frequently to increase production.
-Encourage your baby to breastfeed because now his weight is appropriate and may be he is able to take breastfeed because sucking reflex increase milk production. This will induce suckling reflex and is the best way.
-You can consult your treating physician for prescription drug domperidon.
-You should take a high calorie diet.
-Drink a lot of water, fluids.

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply.
One of the suggestions you gave was encourage the baby to breastfeed. The problem with this is that as soon as baby is taken to the breasts, he starts crying a lot. Since, he is habitual of getting more milk in cup feeds, he starts crying as soon as he tries to suck the breast and the milk flow is very slower than cup feed (in form of drops)

Brief Answer:
Try with patience.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Sorry for the delay in my response.

I can understand your concern here.

I know it is really difficult in starting because your baby is habitual for cup feeding, but believe me if you try it with some patience the baby start sucking it.

Sucking reflex will further increase milk production.

So now it is only a matter of time.

Hope it is useful.

Do accept my answer if no further query.

Good luck.
Regards
Dr.Richa
