Suggest Ways To Detect Colon Cancer

Posted on Tue, 2 Sep 2014
Question: Hi Dr. Pottinger:
Thanks for getting in touch with me.
I think I mentioned to you that I probably will need a routine colonoscopy; they did find a polyp about six years ago which was benign and removed; but am reluctant to do it because I have pvcs that at times get so out of control when under stress. I wish there were another way to detect colon cancer or perform a colonoscopy without the sedation that what concerns me the most is the anesthesia. Your input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Colonoscopy is a low risk procedure.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for the further question. I understand your concern regarding your forthcoming colonoscopy. However, PVCs are relatively common and in the majority of people are not associated with any underlying cardiac problems. Also, I note you mentioned that your cardiologist does not seem concerned.
In order to relax you prior to your procedure, I suggest you ask the doctor to give you a premedication as this may take the edge off your nerves. This can then be followed by sedation during the procedure. If any PVCs occur these can easily be terminated by a number if drugs including beta blockers.
I hope this has reassured you. If I can help any further do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards,
Dr K A Pottinger
