Suggest Ways To Decrease Prolactin Levels
Question: Hello
My prolactine levels are high
The maximun according to the lab is 26 and i have a prolactine level of 48
I have done mri and i do not have any prolactinona
I have taken cabergoline before when i had prolactine levels very high like 2000.
Now where i live the cabergoline is not used. So what do i take to decrease the prolactine levels???

Good day,
Noted your concern. There are a number of reasons for a high prolactin value.
1) Pituitary nodules/ tumours near pituitary pressing on the pituitary stalk.
2) Stress.
3) Certain medicines: Anti psychotics, anti depressants, acidity pills, anti nausea/vomting pills,
4) Hypothyroidism.
5) Kidney and liver diseases.
6) Breast masses.
7) Breast/chest stimulation.
I presume your doctors have ruled out these causes of high prolactin ( noted that MRI was normal).
We need to find the cause of elevated prolactin before starting treatment.
What symptoms do you have?
Any breast discharge/irregular periods/infertility/headaches/blurred vision. ?
If you have none of the above problems, there is no need of treatment at your current levels of prolactin.
If cabergoline is not available, the other option is Bromocriptine.

Well i have no symptoms at all . It was a routine exam just to check how the prolactine was behaving. When I had it elevated I had awful headaches.
However, i was diagnosed with subclinic hypothyroidism two years ago. And I take 50mcg of syntroid. Do i need to do a blood test to check tsh levels etc?

Yes, it is a good idea to do a TSH levels. I would say that, since your pituitary MRI was normal and since you have no symptoms, you shouldnt chase a Prolactin levels at all. There are occasions when one may have "Macroprolactin " where prolactin molecule size is large and hence the test will show up as high prolactin. There is no relevance for this.
