Question: I punctured my right thumb with a security tag at work yesterday. it went about an inch into my thumb. it was hard to remove. today it is red and puffy. my muscles in that arm feel weak. like I was working out all day. I do not have a fever. My temp is 97.6. it's a little lower than normal but nothing too crazy. I have taken aleve, cleaned the area with alcohol and put neosporen on it.

Brief Answer:
Hot fomentation will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A puncture wound in the thumb is likely to cause local pain and swelling. The redness is due to inflammation in the area. It can cause the muscle stiffness also.
All you have to do now is to allow it to rest and avoid working with right hand. Use anti inflammatory medications prescribed by your physician for few days. Try not to get it in extreme positions unless required. Use of crepe bandage can prove beneficial. Occasional hot fomentation is recommended. Begin movements of thumb gradually.
In case there is a sudden increase in swelling or intense pain then do consult your physician to rule out any infection.
I hope this answers your query.
