Suggest Treatment For Viral Respiratory Tract Infection

default
Posted on Sat, 26 Apr 2014
Question: I have been out of the country and am taking chloroquine. I have three moe doses left. I recently came down with a raging viral respiratory infection last week and the doctor wrote a presciption for a z-pack if I wasn't any better by this weekend. I'm so-so. But am a little leary to start the antibiotics because of cardiac side effects. I know there can be moderate interaction between the two drugs. What do you think?

Brief Answer: A viral respiartory infection needs no antibiotics Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. A viral respiratory tract infection does not require antibiotics for treatment. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections and not viral infections. Most viral infections are self limiting and treatment consists in managing the symptoms. However, if symptoms persist with a suspicion for a possible bacteria superinfection like purulent and thick mucus production, spiking fevers, etc antibiotics are not advised. If you have any other symptoms beside the respiratory symptoms, report to me and we shall see whether using the Zpack would be justified at this time. As for the side effects, they may sound frightening but happen only in a very low proportion of the population. At least 1million people take this drug daily around the planet and if this side effect were that common, then we would have recorded so many cardiac incidences already. It is good to be cautious but this drug is a safe drug relatively. There is no major interaction between azithromycin and chloroquine. I hope this answers your query fully. Feel free to ask for more specifics if needed. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services. Dr. Ivo, MD.
